The Met Gala 2019 – Best Looks

Ezra Miller in Burberry - Met Ball 2019

Arguably the biggest night in the Fashion calendar, The Met Gala. The first Monday of May sees the biggest names in fashion, art, music, film and pop culture come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition.

First hosted in 1948 by Eleanor Lambert to raise money from New York’s high society. Since 1995, the modern incarnation of the MET Ball has been chaired by Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, with this year being co-chaired by Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Alessandro Michele.

When I heard that this year’s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, I was very excited. I immediately thought of John Galliano at Dior, Schiaparelli, Jeremy Scott for Moschino and 90s Anna Sui. Anna Wintour has described it as retracing the steps from 17th Century Versailles courts to now. “Basically, we go from sun kings to drag queens.” The whole premise of the theme, ‘campness’ is to be over the top and too much, so I thought there were going to be some fabulous looks on the night.

Emphasis on thought. I was severely disappointed with the overall looks from the night. It seemed that a majority misunderstood the theme? Don’t get me wrong, there was an abundance of beautiful dresses but the references weren’t there or the references were based on previous themes – I’m looking at you Dakota Johnson.

I was particularly disappointed by the lack of representation of the LBGTQ+ community, in particular, queer POC. I am by no means a spokesperson or expert on the queer community but I was shocked by the lack of Queens at an event celebrating CAMP-ness.

Overall, I felt the main issue was people looking good but not fitting the theme and others fitting the theme but not looking good. Saying this though, there were some redeeming looks.
