Gin With Heart – Isle of Harris Gin

Shelf of Isle of Harris Gin

I want to take some time to talk about my favourite gin: Isle of Harris Gin!  Let’s be-gin!

The Isle of Harris Distillery, nestled in the heart of Tarbert, is also known as The Social Distillery and has played an important role on the islands since opening in 2015. Providing jobs, tourism and a breath of life into the close and quiet community. My family come from the neighbouring village of Scalpay, located just 20 minutes away and it has been wonderful to see the positive changes the distillery has brought to the island.

The Isle of Harris Distillery currently produces gin made in a small copper gin still, known as ‘The Dottach’ – a local name for a small fiery and feisty woman, much like all the women in my family. Isle of Harris Distillery is primarily a whisky distillery, though we still won’t see ‘The Hearach‘ for another few years.

Above you can see the tasting notes found in a glass of Harris Gin. Of all the botanicals used, it’s the Sugar kelp harvested by local divers from the deep underwater forests of the Outer Hebrides, that makes Harris gin truly unique!

Another unique aspect of  Harris Gin is the beautiful glass bottle inspired by Luskentyre and the other awe-inspiring beaches of Harris. No two labels are alike, each individually flecked with fragments of copper leaf and Sugar Kelp. The bottle is finished with a simplistic wood and cork stopper, sealed with the coordinates of the distillery. The Isle of Harris Distillery have created a bottle so unique and special that once finished with, it is common to see the bottles fashioned into lights, vases and candle holders. It is a sin waste such a pretty bottle!

If you are looking for a new gin and exciting gin to try, Harris gin is the one for you. Versatile and fragrant, sweet, earthy and tart – Harris gin is a real pleasure to drink. Not to mention that by buying it you are contributing to the regeneration of the small island community. I can not recommend enough!

Don’t be expecting to pick up a bottle in Tesco, Harris gin cannot be bought through anywhere other than the distillery and their click and collect service on the mainland. Find out how to buy/try it here: https://www.harrisdistillery.com/

Until next time,

Slàinte Mhath!
