Glasgow’s Cutting-Edge Craze – Axe Hurling

“And MY axe!”

On more than one occasion I’ve been compared to Legolas from Lord of the Rings… I’m not entirely sure if it’s meant as an insult but being compared to an incredibly beautiful, ethereal elf? I’ll take it.

So when it came taking my place on the Fellowship, I never thought I’d be like Gimli and picking up an axe. But it turns out I’m strangely good at it!

As an effort to keep date night exciting, Jack and I recently gave axe throwing a go. Axe Hurling is Glasgow’s cutting-edge new craze. Based in an Anderston industrial estate, it may seem more like a 90s slash-horror rather than the newest Glasgow hotspot but either way, it’ll be a scream.

After running through the basic safety procedures, you have a chance to practice both one and two armed throws. As someone that hates not mastering a skill immediately but has literally zero upper body strength, I was annoyed when a lot of my aims didn’t even reach the board. But I am someone that is unhealthily competitive and the thought of losing at anything makes my teeth grind. I persisted.

Then it was competition time and my burning desire to win at all costs came out. With various competitions between you and your party, it’s a chance to put your new skills to the test. With steely determination, I stepped up to the line axe in hand and then to my surprise (and everyone else’s in the room) it was bullseyes across the board. Beating Jack was a euphoric feeling. But being the graceful winner that I am, I decided to share his defeat with the internet rather than rub it in his face then and there.

If you decide to give axe throwing a try, go ready to laugh at yourself for being shit. Don’t be like the 30-something-year-old, for the lack of a better term, man-baby in our group that had a tantrum and stormed out after only got three points in the entirety of the competition… Talk about awkward for everyone!

So unless you or any of your friends were Vikings or lumberjacks in a past life, you’ll most likely all be on a level playing field. Or maybe you’ll be a *ahem* natural talent like me.

This is seriously the most fun I’ve had in a long time and I cannot recommend it enough.

Axe Hurling costs £15 for two hours on weekdays and £20 on weekends, buy your tickets here.

Does this something you’d like to try your hand at or are you a bit of a liability around sharp objects?

Until next time,

Ashleigh x
